Barren tundra lands are home to hardy flora and fauna and are one of the Earth's coldest, harshest biomes. Tundra ecosystems are treeless regions found in the Arctic and on the tops of mountains, where the climate is cold and windy, and rainfall is scant. Tundra lands are covered with snow for much of the year, but summer brings bursts of wildflowers.

Mountain goats, sheep, marmots, and birds live in mountain—or alpine—tundra and feed on the low-lying plants and insects. Hardy flora like cushion plants survive in the mountain zones by growing in rock depressions, where it is warmer and they are sheltered from the wind. The Arctic tundra, where the average temperature is to 20 degrees Fahrenheit to -6 degrees Celsiussupports a variety of animal species, including Arctic foxespolar bearsgray wolvescaribousnow geeseand musk oxen.

The summer growing season is just 50 to 60 days, when the sun shines up to 24 hours a day.

The relatively few species of plants and animals that live in the harsh conditions of the tundra are essentially clinging to life. They are highly vulnerable to environmental stresses like reduced snow cover and warmer temperatures brought on by global warming.

The Arctic tundra is changing dramatically due to global warminga term that falls within a wider range of trends scientists now prefer to call climate change. The impacts in this region are broad and somewhat unpredictable. Animals that are typically found further south, like the red foxare moving north onto the tundra. This means the red fox is now competing with the Arctic fox for food and territory, and the long-term impact on the sensitive Arctic fox is unknown.

This map shows the major regions where tundras are most common; tundras are in yellow. Tundras are often located near permanent ice sheets where during summer the ice and snow recede to expose the ground, allowing vegetation to grow. Other tundra denizens, such as the wolf spider, are growing bigger and thriving.

Shrubs are getting tallercontributing to declines in the sensitive groups of lichen that caribou and other species depend on for food. Lakes and ponds are evaporating or draining away. The Arctic's permafrost, the literal foundation for much of the region's unique ecosystem, is deteriorating with the warmer global climate. Permafrost is a layer of frozen soil and dead plants that extends some 1, feet meters below the surface.

In much of the Arctic, it is frozen year-round. In the southern regions of the Arctic, the surface layer above the permafrost melts during the summer, and this forms bogs and shallow lakes that invite an explosion of animal life. Insects swarm around the bogs, and millions of migrating birds come to feed on them.Available on select Toyotas. Tundra is known for large stretches of bare ground and rock and for patchy mantles of low vegetation such as mosseslichensherbs, and small shrubs.

This surface supports a meagre but unique variety of animals. The Finns called their treeless northern reaches the tunturibut the concept of a vast frozen plain as a special ecological realm called tundra was developed by the Russians. One constant factor shaping the tundra is alternate freezing and thawing of the ground. Along with the factors mentioned above, this freeze-thaw cycle sets the tundra apart from two ecosystems frequently found adjacent to it—the icy polar barrens on the one hand and the evergreen taiga on the other.

Permafrost —perennially frozen ground—is a significant feature of the Arctic tundra; however, it does not typically occur in alpine regions. The southern limit of Arctic tundra follows the northern edge of the coniferous forest belt. The northward bulge of forest in Eurasia is a result of the warmer summers that occur over that large contiguous landmass. This habitat can be found in mountainous areas worldwide, occurring at high elevations where temperatures are too low and winds are too strong for the growth of trees.

The average elevation where alpine tundra occurs is generally higher near the Equator than at the poles. Because nearly all of Antarctica is covered with iceit lacks a well-developed tundra, though lichens, mosses, and at least three species of flowering plants occur in more favourable habitats there. The tundra soil is rich in nitrogen and phosphorus. There are three regions and associated types of tundra: Arctic tundra, [2] alpine tundra[2] and Antarctic tundra. Arctic tundra occurs in the far Northern Hemispherenorth of the taiga belt. The word "tundra" usually refers only to the areas where the subsoil is permafrostor permanently frozen soil.

Permafrost tundra includes vast areas of northern Russia and Canada. Arctic tundra contains areas of stark landscape and is frozen for much of the year. Instead, bare and sometimes rocky land can only support certain kinds of Arctic vegetationlow growing plants such as moss, heath Ericaceae varieties such as crowberry and black bearberryand lichen.

There are two main seasons, winter and summer, in the polar tundra areas. However, extreme cold temperatures on the tundra do not drop as low as those experienced in taiga areas further south for example, Russia's and Canada's lowest temperatures were recorded in locations south of the tree line. During the summer, temperatures rise somewhat, and the top layer of seasonally-frozen soil melts, leaving the ground very soggy.

The tundra is covered in marshes, lakes, bogs and streams during the warm months. Arctic tundras are sometimes the subject of habitat conservation programs. Although precipitation is light, evaporation is also relatively minimal. During the summer, the permafrost thaws just enough to let plants grow and reproduce, but because the ground below this is frozen, the water cannot sink any lower, and so the water forms the lakes and marshes found during the summer months.

There is a natural pattern of accumulation of fuel and wildfire which varies depending on the nature of vegetation and terrain.

Research in Alaska has shown fire-event return intervals FRIs that typically vary from to years, with dryer lowland areas burning more frequently than wetter highland areas. The biodiversity of tundra is low: 1, species of vascular plants and only 48 species of land mammals can be found, although millions of birds migrate there each year for the marshes.

There are few species with large populations. Notable animals in the Arctic tundra include reindeer cariboumusk oxArctic hareArctic foxsnowy owllemmingsand even polar bears near the ocean. Due to the harsh climate of Arctic tundra, regions of this kind have seen little human activity, even though they are sometimes rich in natural resources such as petroleumnatural gas and uranium. A severe threat to tundra is global warmingwhich causes permafrost to melt.

The melting of the permafrost in a given area on human time scales decades or centuries could radically change which species can survive there. Another concern is that about one third of the world's soil-bound carbon is in taiga and tundra areas. When the permafrost melts, it releases carbon in the form of carbon dioxide and methane, [8] [9] both of which are greenhouse gases. The effect has been observed in Alaska. You can also do the same you did in the previous email, and send them some tips to help them enjoy the product better.

Because of this, the Vine program is the only way to get those reviews we used to get through companies like Review Kick.

This does nothing but increase the barrier of entry to anyone who wants to launch a new product in the Amazon ecosystem. The fees to access the program will vary depending on the vendor. All Vine products are submitted by vendors to Amazon and distributed by Amazon to the Vine Voices.

Vendors have no contact with the Vine Voices, and have no influence over which Vine Voices will review their products. We could expect this to change in the near future once the interest on the Vine program increases. But one thing is guaranteed: everyone in this business will be positively affected.

Customers will get better products on their hands, Amazon will improve its brand, and small business private label brands will be able to differentiate themselves with better quality products. As long as you focus on creating a high-quality product, your company will be safe.
